…if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination. For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.
Titus 1:6-9 ESV
Our elders carry a significant responsibility from the Lord in serving His congregation. Elders have three key roles:
- First, the elders serve as overseers of the local congregation, each assigned to a specific ward. They are responsible for the members within their care, providing comfort, guidance, and, when necessary, admonition.
- Second, they ensure that the governance and life of the church are conducted in accordance with biblical principles.
- Third, the elders support the ministers of the Word (the Pastors) by offering biblical counsel, ensuring that the congregation is continually edified by the good news of the gospel in every aspect of church life.
